There are fears that schoolchildren in Tonbridge will be put in danger if a plan to remove metal railings in the town is approved.
Kent County Council (KCC) wants to remove railings which protect pupils walking to and from three schools, thisiskent.co.uk reports.
It is part of a county-wide scheme to remove railings in 12 towns, but some of Tonbridge's 350 railings were only installed 18 months ago, with the specific aim of boosting safety.
Some borough councillors are concerned that KCC's plans are about the appearance of the railings, not safety.
Councillor Liz Simpson said: "They've already done this in Maidstone and I don't feel any safer. In fact, I feel more vulnerable with the lorries roaring past."
Recently, concerns were raised about the pedestrian guardrail at a bridge in Cumbernauld, Scotland.
One MSP, Cathie Craigie, has said it is too low, and is particularly worrying given it is regularly used by school children.
