Homeowners at risk of flooding may want to consider installing crash barriers to protect their properties.

According to the the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) homeowners should consider devices to protect them from flooding, as well as keeping up to date with relevant guidance.

Recently, parts of Cockermouth and Workington in Cumbria were hit with flash floods following torrential rain and the Environment Agency has issued several flood warnings for parts of the south-west England and Wales.

Graeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at Biba, said: "If you are in a flood risk area it is really important to sign up to the Environment Agency flood alert line, then you will know if there is a flood warning."

He added that devices like airbrick covers and door shields should be considered by people living in an area that experiences flooding regularly.

"You should absolutely get these protection devices and brokers can tell you which ones are the right ones to get and which ones the insurance companies recognise," he said.

Over 100 homes were evacuated during the recent Cumbria floods.
