Effective security systems, such as metal railings, can help firms keep a range of costs down, it has been stated.
Adrian Platts, of the Business Crime Reduction Centre, said security products offer businesses both material and physical benefits.
"An effective security system will not only keep insurance premiums down, it will protect business continuity and potential crime costs in the future," he explained.
But the emphasis should be on 'effective'. Mr Platts stressed that firms tempted to under invest in security systems are dabbling in a false economy.
Some firms have scant regard for security, regarding it as a "grudge purchase", he said.
"Often, a business will look to cost savings and may only have a simple system installed. This can be a false economy.
"If a security system is not fit for purpose, it may not be worth installing it in the first place."
