The removal of a security fencing in Ulverston, Cumbria, has caused concern for elderly residents in the region.

As part of an initiative by the Highway Agency, the fencing was removed to make way for work on the A590, but the residents believe that are in danger from the busy road outside the Ellerside sheltered housing.

Homeowners are concerned that the removal between the grassed area and the A590 means that their grandchildren and great grandchildren are unable to play safely around their bungalows.

Maureen Foxon, 85, told The North West Evening Mail: "This doesn’t reassure me yet. We shouldn’t have been left without a fence. It's dangerous to leave it. One day is long enough without a fence when you live this close to the road."

The Highways Agency, which is also conducting a number of road renovation projects across the country, told the newspaper that the fencing had been removed as it had been damaged and reassured residents that it would be replaced by the end of the month.
