High security fencing has been installed on the grounds of a leisure centre in Cambridgeshire to ward off travellers settling in the area.

The barriers have been put up just days after a group of people in caravans and trucks illegally parked on the Littleport Leisure Centre, but they have since vacated. However, it is feared that the travellers could return and officials at the facility have moved to ensure a similar incident does not happen.

Lives of travellers has been well acknowledged in Channel 4's documentary "Big Fat Gypsy Weddings" but bosses at the leisure do not want these people returning to the site and illegally squatting there.

Despite staff admitting relief that they had moved on, there have been warnings that the travellers could return.

A spokeswoman for the centre told Ely Weekly News: "We've been told that they've moved towards Cambridge and that they might come back to Littleport and we're hearing lots of rumours that they will come back. That's why we’re putting up fencing and improving security to try and stop them if they do."
