A set of "eyesore" bollards in Greenock, Inverclyde, are to be removed following years of complaints from residents.

Operators of the A78 road, Amey, have announced that they will be removed from the road bridge which goes over the Gourock to Glasgow railway line, and are to be replaced by raised kerbs and metal railings that will prevent cars from parking along it.

The Greenock Telegraph reported that many residents have opposed the bollards ever since they were installed. Peter Galbraith, secretary of the West Station Action Group, described their appearance as looking like the "defences of Dunkirk".

A spokesman for Amey told the source: "Following the works the concrete barriers, which have been on site since 2001, will be removed and Newton Street will be fully operational again."

There was equal jubilation when a set of bollards were removed from the River Tyne in Newcastle which were believed not to be in keeping with original request of the Millennium Bridge architect.
