London is one of the busiest cities in the world with millions of people using public transport to get to work every morning.
With the Underground services and a host of bus routes the English capital is used to an influx of passengers attempting to get from their homes to work on time. Now there is a new development coming to the heart of London which is aimed at reducing congestion and giving commuters an extra option for travelling around the capital, Crossrail.
The project is one of the biggest feats of engineering across Europe and is set to connect 37 stations across London, making travelling around the region both easier and quicker.
However, while officials have stated that this will significantly benefit the population of London how will it affect the average commuter?
As many people will have experienced the rush hour in the capital at some point and it can be a nightmare at times, with hundreds of people trying to get home after a hard day at the office. The Underground can be an unpleasant experience during peak hours and the Crossrail route is designed to help relieve a lot of this congestion.
The creation of this route, which will be phased in over the coming years, will help provide Londoners with another option instead of the arduous task of battling on to the Underground. It will also provide a fast connection from Heathrow Airport to the rest of the capital, which will allow great opportunities for businesses, while at the same time being increasingly attractive for holidaymakers. Officials behind the Crossrail development have already spoken of the host of other benefits that the new network will provide aside from the obvious in terms of reducing the congestion on the Tube system. The Crossrail is said to have a number of substantial economic benefits in London, the south-east and even further ranging to the rest of the UK.
Construction firms all over the country have felt the benefit as the development has been able to create some of the largest contracts in history. At a time when the nation is going through financial hardship and the sector as a whole has been struggling with a reduction in the amount of new work that is being created, these deals have been a welcome relief for many firms within the industry.
Crossrail is not just confined to the construction sector in terms of providing significant growth, the development is also estimated to provide at least £42 billion to the UK economy, which will go some way to boost the financial state of the country. It is not only the line that is getting a makeover because this project is set to improve the surrounding areas of the stations it will pass through.
The wheels have already been put in motion for this side of things after Transport for London (TfL) recently announced that it had approved a £30 million contribution to the Crossrail public realm scheme. It will make the development the first of its kind to integrate both new station designs with plans for improved public spaces. Officials stated that Crossrail would be working with leading architects to ensure that these plans come to fruition in the future.
John Mathers, chief executive of the design council explained: “Crossrail’s approach has been innovative and ambitious using design to maximise value, secure quality and deliver wider benefits through supporting wider regeneration. The success of the project and individual stations will depend on how they relate to the streets and spaces around them. Over and above the practical functions of the interchanges, Crossrail have realised the potential for public spaces to lift the spirits of station users.”

The main aim is for passengers to have a space outside of the facilities which is enjoyable to sit and to pass through when they are making their daily commute.
It is hoped that the image of a dark, dank public transport station that may have been associated with London in the past will be banished forever as the Crossrail aims to create more pleasant surroundings. There are also plans afoot to create wider pavements, new pedestrianised areas, as well as extra traffic calming measures outside the facilities to help reduce the amount the threat of accidents.
