Figures due to be released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are expected to show a rise in construction deaths, highlighting the importance of security fencing to help keep workers safe.
According to Construction Enquirer, site fatalities are on the increase for the first time in four years, the data, due to be published this summer, will show.
The statistics, which are for now provisional, are understood to reveal that more than the 42 construction deaths recorded in 2009/10 occurred for the year up to April 2011.
This will be the first time levels have risen since 2006/07 when 79 people were killed.
The HSE said it was possible the recession had led to firms "corner cutting" on safety, Construction Enquirer said.
The official figures are expected to confirm the trend of smaller sites accounting for a greater proportion of deaths with small refurbishment jobs still an accident blackspot.
Recent figures from the HSE show that construction deaths for the period April 1st and December 31st 2010 stand at 39.
