The Port of Mombasa, in Kenya, will have smart security fencing installed as part of a $21.4 million redevelopment project.
According to PortWorld, Magal Security Systems, an Israeli developer, will install the wide-ranging series of security measures.
In addition to ten kilometres of smart fencing, access control gates and a CCTV system will also be developed.
"This project is key to securing the port, but more importantly, securing the trade and growth of Kenya and its neighbouring countries," Shukri Barmadi, chairman of the Kenyan Ports Authority, was quoted by PortWorld as saying.
Eitan Livneh, president and chief executive officer of Maga, said he hoped the port would eventually secure international ship and port facility security compliance.
East Africa's largest port, Mombasa is a transit hub for Kenya's import and export trading. It receives ships from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Zaire and others, and handles commercial vessels like cruise ships.
