A consortium led by construction firm Kier has been chosen as the preferred candidate to undertake a major project to renovate 11 fire stations across the Staffordshire region.

The Blue3 group, which also consists of the Calderpeel Partnership Limited, beat off the likes of Vinci to land the £50 million contract to take on phase two of the development which will see the area's vital fire stations undergo major renovation work. As part of the initiative Blue3 will improve facilities at stations in Burton-upon-Trent, Kinver, Lichfield, Longton, Leek, Stone, Chase Terrace, Rugeley, Codsall and Penkridge as well as relocating the Ashley community fire station in Loggerheads.

Following on from the initial phase which was undertaken by Bilfinger Berger, which saw the rebuilding of seven stations as well as the construction of three new facilities Blue3 will now finalise design of the 11 stations and present a detailed schedule of the building programme. The full planning application will then be sent for approval with a final contract due to be signed in 2013 with work on the fire stations beginning shortly after.

Chief fire officer and chief executive Peter Dartford said: "Five organisations qualified to take part in the procurement process, and this was reduced to just two bidders in July last year. It was a close contest with both companies, Blue3 and Vinci, producing excellent submissions. We now look forward to progressing the project with blue3."

It is hoped that once complete, the renovated fire stations will provide a much improved home to Staffordshire's ever-important force as well as improving the service to the public as a result.

Kier's latest contract win comes after it also was granted the £45 million contract to assist in the Egghill development programme in Birmingham which will see the company build 400 new homes in a bid to revitalise the UK's second largest city. Once the project reaches completion the properties will be sold to families and also to Birmingham's Housing Association in both public and private transactions.
