Plans to renovate Manchester's famous St Peter's Square have been unveiled by the city council, which has enlisted the help of a German designer to bring the project to life.
The local authority has chosen landscape architects Landz + Partner to take on the £20 million development which will help to create a world-renowned city square, as well as transforming the area back to its former glory. The company's plans will aim to give St Peter's Square a more continental vibe with the creation of a new public landmark to commermorate the Peterloo Massacre, which happened there in 1819, to go alongside the library which is currently undergoing major renovation and is due to be complete in 2013.
Manchester's Cenotaph will also be relocated, but will be placed on a plinth which aims to stand at the same height of the city's historic library. Landz + Partner is planning to create a tree-lined space complete with benches and flower beds and will be inline the current regeneration of the town hall.
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester council, said: "St Peter's Square is an important public space which has not been living up to anything like its full potential.
"But we believe the regenerated square will be a symbol of both the city's heritage and its growing international standing - somewhere Manchester and Mancunians can be proud of."
Work will begin at the end of the year and is due to be complete by 2014. The north-west city is currently undergoing major regeneration work as Transport for Greater Manchester is carrying out work to expand the area's Metrolink service. St Peter's Square is set to be affected, as the organisation is looking to create a second city-centre link which will create a line running parallel to the current Victoria to Piccadilly route and will pass through the square from St Anne's Square.
Other plans afoot include expanding the service to Oldham, Rochdale, Ashton-under-Lyne, and Drolysden with an extension to Manchester Airport proposed to be complete by 2016.
