A scheme that demonstrates how metal gates can be used to reduce crime has so far proved a success in Stockland Green.

The initiative has been underway for the past six months and has so far led to a 15 per cent annual fall in the number of burglaries in the area.

Existing metal gates that had been installed behind Slade Road and George Road were aimed at restricting access to the rear of the properties.

However, not all residents were locking the gates, while others found their locks had been damaged.

Police have therefore been working with local residents to make sure all the gates have fully functioning locks and that people take just a few seconds to check they are secure.

Police Community Support Officer Sam Woollaston commented: "The reduction in burglaries in the area just goes to show how following the simplest of advice can have a dramatic impact on reducing crime."
