A major crackdown has been launched in Mid Wales to prevent the theft of items like metal gates.

The Shropshire Star reported that there has been a rise in reported incidents in recent weeks, with scrap metal thieves looking to cash in.

Operation Beagle will now see vehicles being stopped and searched, while visits will be carried out at scrap metal collectors.

Sian George, a spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police, said: "An increase in the demand for metals such as copper and lead has led in recent months to metal theft becoming an increasing crime trend across the area."

She added that the thieves are looking to target anything from copper cables and metal gates to railings and fencing.

Ms George also called on the public's help to report any suspicious behaviour to the police.

Last month, police in Gloucestershire launched a clampdown after metal gates and other materials of worth were stolen by thieves.
