Police in North Yorkshire will step up their fight against metal theft by launching a new logging system.
The York Press obtained figures through the Freedom of Information Act to show that more than 1,300 such offences took place last year.
With the value of scrap metal railings, lead and copper at a record high, criminals are looking to take what they can before trading their swag in for cash.
However, North Yorkshire Police are changing the way that they record the offences so that they can build up a fuller picture of this kind of offence.
Julian Sturdy, York Outer MP, told the source: "Changes are being made to the laws, but in a debate this week I will be urging ministers not to take their eye off the ball, because through introducing a cashless payment system, the danger is that the illegal trade in metal will be driven underground on to the black market."
Earlier this month it was reported that residents in Southampton had taken to unhinging their gates and storing them inside in order to prevent them becoming the latest victims of scrap metal theft.
