Installing high-security fencing may be one of the most effective means of preventing heating oil from being stolen, the Norfolk Constabulary has revealed.

Demand for heating oil is on the rise, as the increase in fuel prices makes the product more appealing to thieves.

The force therefore recommends taking a number of precautionary measures to make sure thieves are deterred from taking the fuel and selling it on for a profit.

Norfolk Constabulary suggests putting up steel fencing around the perimeter of the whole tank, although people need to bear in mind that it must remain accessible to the oil tanker driver.

DS Jessop from Norfolk Constabulary's dedicated RADAR team said: "People look after their valuables such as laptops and jewellery inside the home, so it makes sense that people apply the same care to their property that is located on the outside of their premises."
