Security fencing is one deterrent against rural crime, police have said, following a dramatic increase being reported in Norfolk.

According to the Bury Free Press, the police have said large machinery is being stolen almost daily.

The force is now urging farmers to be on their guard after recording 51 crimes in the first three months of this year alone.

Suffolk police have also said there had been at least 39 thefts over the same period just in the west of the county.

A Suffolk police spokeswoman was quoted by the newspaper as saying security fencing could deter would-be intruders.

"Trackers and other anti-theft devices can be fitted to trailers and vehicles, and security lighting, CCTV, fencing and alarms can all deter thieves."

One farmer, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the Bury Free Press: "Twenty years ago we would leave a tractor at the side of a drove and you might just take the key out. Now we won’t leave anything anywhere."

Last year, the Conservatives claimed that rural areas recorded a 37 per cent increase in robberies between 1998/99 and 2009.
