Security fencing has gone up at a bowling club in South Tyneside to tackle a recent spate of crime that has affected the respectable club.
Cleadon Park Veterans’ Bowling Club, off Quarry Lane, has been raided twice this year alone, which cost the club hundreds of pounds worth of damage, reported the Shields Gazette.
In other incidents, windows have been smashed, kits ruined and lights broken.
It is hoped that the £4,000 security fencing, which was secured with the help of Alex Donaldson, a ward councillor, will put an end to the criminal activities.
Speaking to the newspaper, Mr Donaldson said: "The fence looks very smart, and surrounds most of the building, but we were also keen to ensure that it didn’t appear to resemble a jail or Fort Knox."
He added that people were so far pleased with the fence and that it fitted "in well with the area".
Members of a bowling club in Hull went on protest by refusing to pay their membership until security was improved.
