Security fencing has been installed around a section of York Minster so that stone masons can repair one of its stone pinnacles.
The stone was loosened by the recent winds that swept the country.
Dean's Park was temporarily closed so that security fencing could be deployed to protect staff and the public.
Experts will now set to work repairing the pinnacle, which rests on the building's North West Tower.
Rebecca Thompson, superintendent of works, explained that the pinnacle stones were moving "quite severely" in strong winds.
"We had closed off a section of the park and to mitigate the future risk of the pinnacle falling to the ground, we will be appointing a specialist contractor to design the scaffold for this tower," she added.
It is thought that the pinnacle has probably been loose for some time and was accelerated by the recent bad weather.
The cathedral is one of only two in the world to have its own police force.
