The final contract of the Crossrail development has been handed out and will see Skanska and Costain come together to construct the Bond Street station.

As part of a joint venture the two will work in tandem to build the last station on the new London transport line. Officials stated that the new facility will be directly connected to the nearby Underground station, which will allow commuters to easily move between the two, meaning that the daily journey to work can be much simpler and quicker.

As part of the agreement Costain and Skanska will be required to create around 11 new apprenticeships and new jobs for those that have been unemployed for long periods. Officials also added that both the construction phase and the operational sides of things will help to create hundreds of employment opportunities for people living within the capital.

Crossrail is designed at making travel across the capital much easier and helping to reduce the amount of congestion on the Underground, especially at peak times such as rush hour. When the Bond Street station is complete it will provide an easy link between the likes of Canary Wharf, Stratford and Heathrow, as well as cutting down travel times and the number of changes needed when commuting via the Tube.

Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail chief executive, said: "Crossrail will transform access to the West End while also acting as a catalyst for the major development and regeneration of the local area. Twenty-four trains an hour in each direction will pass through the station during peak periods, hugely enhancing the capacity at one of central London's busiest stations."

Bond Street is just one of a host of new stations that will be constructed as part of the Crossrail development with facilities being built as Paddington, Tottenham Court, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Custom House. The construction of the latter was recently awarded to Laing O'Rourke which stated that it would be completed by December 2015.
