Innovative solar-powered security bollards will be installed on streets in Huddersfield following a successful trial.
Kirklees Council says the bollards will save money and provide an environmentally-friendly way to control traffic. They are also strong enough to survive low-speed impacts, reducing the number that need to be replaced.
Highly reflective, they also have a special coating to prevent the build-up of dirt from passing vehicles.
According to the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, there have been complaints that the traditional bollards were sometimes not replaced after being hit by vehicles and are covered in muck from the roads.
"Traditional bollards have a number of drawbacks which include the cost of keeping them lit and the need for a power source," said David Sheard, Kirklees cabinet member for Highways and Streetscene.
"The new bollards mean that substantial savings can be made in both replacement, energy consumption and maintenance costs as well as there being no need to connect them to a power source."
