New solar-powered security bollards have been installed in Warrington to reduce energy consumption and save money on bills.
The replacement bollards are part of the 10:10 initiative, Warrington Borough Council said.
Over 500 standard bollards have been replaced with solar-powered or non-lit versions, as well as over 1,000 sign lights updated to use LED lights.
It is believed the changes will save over 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and wipe more than £60,000 from annual energy bills.
"This is a really worthwhile investment, because the savings on our energy bills alone will pay back our costs in less than five years. The new fittings also need less maintenance than the older ones, which will save even more in the future," councillor Alan Litton, executive board member for environment and transport, said.
10:10 is a global initiative, open to, among others, individuals, families, schools, and small and large firms. It asks every participant to work reduce its carbon emissions by ten per cent.
