Residents in Southampton are taking a drastic measure to beat crime in the area by keeping their own security gates inside.
Theives have recently been targeting Shirley and Freemantle with ten gate robberies confirmed. It is believed that criminals are taking advantage of the rising price of raw metals and gates are seen as a valuable commodity.
The epidemic has been become so extreme that it has forced residents to hide their gates inside their own homes. The problem has also been prevalent in Scotland with the country's government launching a new initiative to expand the metal dealers licensing scheme which is hoped will stop the ongoing crime.
PC Jordan Williams, of Hampshire Constabulary, told the Southern Daily Echo: "The rise in metal thefts is due to the high prices being offered for scrap metal currently and we are working closely with scrap metal merchants to make sure they do the appropriate checks and don't buy stolen metal."
