Calls are mounting for better security fencing at Basildon's Sporting Village following a recent break-in at the venue.

Thieves ransacked a changing room during a football match, escaping with a range of goods including iPods and mobile phones, reports the Essex Echo.

Victims criticised the lax security measures at Sporting Village and called for the venue, which opened at Gloucester Park in April, to be tightened.

The mother of a 17-year-old victim whose iPhone was stolen told Echo News: "When I spoke to the Sporting Village about the theft, they told me staff had been too busy to lock the changing rooms.

"They need to at least make sure random people can't walk in and help themselves to whatever they fancy."

Police have launched an investigation into the theft and are going through video footage, which shows three people breaking into the changing rooms after scaling security fencing within the park in order to get into the block.
