The UK government has unveiled a new strategy which aims to get the country to become a world leader in terms of business information modelling (BIM).
A paper published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) details 12 key points for how the nation can develop its construction industry to provide a better standard of this system.
BIM is a key tool in the creation of new buildings and uses 3D digital visualisations to help contractors see how a structure would look prior to actual work beginning. It is designed to reduce the issues that may arise through the construction process and also boost the productivity of the site as builders can note potential problems before they happen.
The government's initiative to make the UK a leader within BIM systems aims to roll-out tenders of this ilk to a number of companies in the construction sector which will help to drive growth, as well as exporting BIM experts to the rest of the world.
Officials noted that the US and Sweden are currently ahead of the UK in terms of BIM expertise but the BIS maintained that the country is making considerable strides to improve their capabilities within the technology.
The document explained: "Other countries are rapidly adopting BIM; we need to progress with the adoption of BIM or these markets will begin to close to UK businesses as countries look for home grown expertise or source its skills and capabilities from elsewhere in the world.
"The threat is at its greatest from dynamic emerging markets, where competition is able to 'leapfrog' using innovative technologies and ways of working."
A number of construction companies have already been taking advantage of the benefits that BIM can provide. United House recently announced it would be using the technology to help construct a mixed-use site on Wharf Road in Islington, north London, which is due to get underway on February 2013 with a completion date earmarked for autumn 2015.
