The University of Manchester has unveiled ambitious plans to help it become one of the top ranking institutes across the UK.

Officials have revealed that the university plans on investing £1 billion over the next ten years to create a 'world-class campus' that will benefit both students and staff for the coming years.

The Estates Master Plan has been approved by the university's board of governors and will see the creation of brand new facilities designed to entice the next generation of students to study in Manchester, as well as providing an improved campus for the current undergraduates and postgraduates.

Manchester is rich with education facilities, playing  host to two universities, with Manchester Metropolitan just a stone's throw from red brick institute, as well as the renowned music college. The expansion of the main university will be able to put the north-west city on the map in terms of higher education, meaning it will be able to compete with the more established and prestigious institutes across the UK.

Officials outlined the first phase of the expansion, which will cost around £700 million and be stretched out over six years. It will encompass a major overhaul of a number of key areas within the university's facilities, including the construction of a new engineering campus, a substantial refurbishment of the university library, new centres for the School of Law and the Manchester Business School, as well as a revamp of the student union. The latter is a hub for activity, with the building being home to the 'academy' music venues which hold live concerts on a daily basis.

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, president and vice-chancellor of The University of Manchester, said: "Our long-term aim, as restated in our Manchester 2020 Vision, has been to create a world leading university that would compete with the best universities in the world and would occupy a single, outstanding campus, where some of our beautiful old buildings would stand alongside the very best in modern facilities for our research and our students."
