High security fencing could be among the features of a proposed supermarket in Faringdon after Waitrose said that it would be looking to open a new store there.

The supermarket firm and Tesco have been battling it out for retail dominance of the area, with the latter receiving permission for a new store in Park Road last week.

However, Waitrose has said that it will continue with plans to introduce a new store to Faringdon and could, therefore, be on course to introduce 2,042-square-metres of new retail space, reports the Oxford Mail.

James Armstrong, a spokesman for Waitrose, told the news provider that his company will continue to do all it can to build a new store in the area.

"We are committed to our proposal for a store in Faringdon and remain confident that our plans would encourage more shoppers to visit the town centre," he explained.

Waitrose already has 255 locations in the UK, employing more than 40,000 different people.
