A school in Winchester has been told to lock its steel gates in a bid to tighten security by the education inspection board Ofsted.
According to the Romsey Advertiser, Oliver's Battery Primary School will now only allow visitors on to the premises either by ringing a bell or calling by telephone.
Ofsted believed that the school's security policies were not good enough and advised it to lock the gates to ensure that the children are safe.
Parents have been informed as the new changes have been put up on the school gates whilst both vehicular and pedestrian entrances have been padlocked shut.
Jo Ayres, acting head teacher at Oliver's Battery Primary School, told the source: "In keeping with other schools we have adopted a policy of keeping our gates locked once the school day has begun and instigating a new system for visitors to the school which involves them following instructions attached to the gate, and contacting reception to gain access to the school."
Security is high on the agenda for the education authority as a school in Cumbria has asked the council for traffic calming to ensure pupil's wellbeing.
