A new business park in the Docklands area of London has been given the go-ahead by officials controlling the area.

The developer, Workspace Group has secured the contract for the £21 million redevelopment project which will see the conversion of Poplar Business Park in Canary Wharf. The company has already unveiled plans which will transform the site into a brand new business facility. It will include 392 apartments alongside a 58,000 sq ft business centre and 12,000 sq ft of light industrial workshops.

The Docklands is set to be subject to significant renovation over the coming years with plans already laid out for new apartments, retail and business facilities. London City Airport is also getting an upgrade to allow more passengers to pass through on an annual basis. Officials are hoping to accommodate an extra 50,000 flights as part of the £200 million expansion of the terminal and surrounding areas.

With more people expected to come to the Docklands and Canary Wharf area over the forthcoming years, the creation of new apartments and business opportunities has been regarded as a major step forward.

Workspace has also stated that the scheme will incorporate two new public squares as well as improved transport links from Poplar High Street to Canary Wharf and Wood Wharf. The new services will allow businessmen and women to travel in and out of the city much easier than currently possible. It is even more poignant with the plans for the Crossrail development accelerating at a pace and are due to be in place over the coming years.

Jamie Hopkins, chief executive officer, said: “We are delighted to have secured planning permission for the redevelopment of the Poplar Business Park. It is a significant redevelopment in an area that will be experiencing a lot of change over the coming years with the arrival of Crossrail at Canary Wharf."
