New sports netting could be among the features at a leisure centre in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea used by youngsters after the local school took it over.

The Northumberland Church of England Academy could be given the leisure centre by the seaside town to provide new facilities to local students for their PE and extra curricular needs.

Current facilities for the academy school are situated in Ashington, but the new campus could be used by pupils from as early as next month, reports journallive.co.uk.

Alan Thompson, a member of the Liberal Democrat executive on Newbiggin council, told the news provider that facilities will benefit both young and old.

"Children who go to the Grace Darling campus from the age of five will be using the centre as their sports facility on a daily basis," he explained.

"Unfortunately, the centre is under-used at present and is nearly empty during the day."

Tranmere Rovers could also require sports netting in the future after submitting plans to build a new training facility in the Woodchurch area.
