Birmingham City University (BCU) is accelerating its improvement work by unveiling a new £58 million transformation project.
The Midlands institute has already committed over £180 million to upgrade its estate and learning facilities but is now looking to consolidate to two campus locations from 2017. This is designed to completely transform the way the university is run and provide a new environment for students and faculty alike.
Unlike the traditional 'red brick' the University of Birmingham, BCU is situated right in the heart of the city alongside Aston University. It not only provides education but also allows students to enjoy a lifestyle living in the UK's second city.
The improvement plans were given the go-ahead by the board of governors and it will mean a relocation of teaching and learning, research and engagement services, student support and professional services to BCU's City South Campus in Edgbaston and the City Centre Campus. It will mean that all the facilities offered by the university will be situated within easy walking distance of the city centre.
Work has been phased between 2013 and 2017. The initial stage included the expansion of the city centre campus and was completed in September 2013. Phase II will see the creation of a facility for the Birmingham City Business School as well as the Schools of English, Law and Social Science, this is due to be finished in 2015. The final stage, earmarked for September 2017, will see the School of Education join the Faculty of Health at City South.
Professor Cliff Allan, vice-chancellor of BCU, said: "Positioning the university at the heart of the city will enable us to capitalise on connections and better engage with local and national business so we can continue our focus on professional and practice-based courses and development to attract students to the city and retain highly-skilled graduates in the region."
