Traffic barriers and congestion could be a familiar sight this month for motorists as the Met Office has issued severe weather warnings.

Snowfalls across Scotland and the north of England have prompted experts to urge drivers to be extra vigilant whilst out on the road. The Met Office has already put weather warnings over the entirety of Northern Ireland as well as the English Pennines.

Black ice will be a hazard across the UK with the Highways Agency calling for continued care over the season.

A spokesman for the organisation said: "We advise drivers to plan their journey carefully by checking weather forecasts and traffic updates before they travel by road. Drivers should also allow for extra time for their journeys in extreme conditions and consider whether their journey is essential."

In Scotland the government already has 120 gritters across the country in order to combat the freezing temperatures and treacherous roads.
