A gate automation system will lead to the creation of new jobs at Glasgow's trains stations.

The creation of a gate automation system at four Glasgow trains stations will lead to the creation of 70 jobs.

As a result of the implementation of the automatic ticket gates, 42 full-time positions and 27 part-time customer service posts, reported Rail.co.uk.

The new members of staff will be responsible for covering the gates.

ScotRail has been responsible for boosting and improving rail travel in Scotland. Since the franchise started in 2004, a thousand new jobs have been created.

Steve Montgomery, managing director of ScotRail, said that the franchise was "delighted" to be creating new jobs around Glasgow city centre.

He told the online rail news provider: "In addition, the gates are expected to save us around £1 million-a-year year in lost revenue. This level of reinvestment will add to the future prosperity and growth of the rail industry within Scotland."

They gates will also act as security measures and clamp down on antisocial behaviour.

The Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser recently reported that residents in the Scottish village of Caldercruix wanted taller security fencing erected to prevent passing train passengers from looking into their homes.
