Background
Reading Train Maintenance Depot is a 6,500m² state-of-the-art site providing servicing and maintenance facilities for 100 trains thanks to a recent £36m project by VolkerFitzpatrick and Network Rail. Due to the site's proximity to residential areas, it was important to ensure that the impact of noise and light pollution on local residents was minimised as much as possible.

Solution
In order to reduce noise for local residents, 400m of Jakoustic® Plus Absorptive acoustic fencing was installed along site perimeters. The absorptive acoustic fencing’s protective membrane reduces sound by up to 32dB*, therefore providing an ideal solution for managing noise effectively for local residents while also providing security and privacy. Five swing gates were also installed across the site to manage and secure access to the site.
To further increase the benefits, our Jakcure® pressure treated timber is guaranteed for 25 years, meaning that Reading Maintenance Depot meets Network Rail’s sustainability requirements.
Our Acoustics Solutions Manager, Justin Khadaroo, said: ‘Jacksons was pleased to be able to offer detailed design support to the client throughout the construction process, ultimately providing our high performance Jakoustic® Plus Asborptive fencing – the ideal solution for a modern and sustainable infrastructure project.’
