A so-called ring of steel is encompassing the perimeter of buildings used for the current Labour party conference.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) began installing security measures at the Manchester Central complex and the Midland and Radisson Edwardian hotels last week.

It said "robust" security would protect delegates at the conference, which runs until September 30th.

"While there is no specific intelligence to suggest that the conference will be a target for terrorists, no one in Manchester will forget the city has been a target for terrorists before," superintendent Bryan Lawton told the newspaper.

"GMP's priority is to ensure the conference and those attending it are safe and secure and that is the reason why we have implemented such a robust policing operation."

Over 10,000 delegates will pass through the conference's doors at the event, which is expected to create over £15 million for the local economy.

On Saturday Ed Miliband was crowned the new Labour leader.
